Back in high school, I hated that rule. As an adult, I'd actually say I try to follow that if I can. I let myself have a little more fun if I'm finding a synonym for a word I've already used, but generally I try not to come right out of the gate and alientate people 😂 I forget if you read my "Is Langugage an Economy or a Tapestry" piece, but I talk a little bit about how I try to toe a line between Orwell's advice and the idea that each word has a distinct function.
