"bad boyfriends don’t just deserve to be dumped but also burned alive while wearing bear costumes" made me laugh 😂 For me, I think that like in Hereditary, there was a sense of pre-ordainment, and that nothing anyone really did while there would have really changed their fates. The painting you see in the beginning definitely gives me that impression. I think it was predetermined that they'd all die and that Dani would become May Queen.
I didn't quite feel like you're supposed to believe he deserves to be set on fire in a bear costume. For me it's more ambiguous than that. And even while I hate his character throughout the movie, I can't help but sympathize for him when he's running around naked and desperate at the end of the movie like that.
