Do I Uhhh… Start Randomly Following People Now?

Okay be honest, is that what you‘re doing? Are you just following people at random? (Non-specific you, of course. I’m sure You would never do that. ☺)

Other you. Yeah you, the one going on the click-happy follow spree! Or are there actually 40K people whose posts you’d like to follow, brand new Medium user, you?

I had a hard enough time keeping up with just my first 100 people. I think… bear with me here… that you were secretly hoping 10,000 of those people might follow you back. 🧐

Hell, I can hardly even knock you for it because the strategy seems to be working pretty well. In fact, it’s working so well that I’m a little tempted to give it a try myself.

But I feel like I follow a decent amount of people already — certainly enough that I have a hard time keeping up with each new post of the people whose work I care most to see. Does following over 1,000 people not feel a little congested? At what point does it feel overwhelming? Just how much garbage will I need to sift through if I start clicking follow until my hands go numb? And how do you find the people to randomly follow? Do I need a roulette wheel? Am I drawing names out of a hat? Is there a methodology? Does that mean it’s not random? Should I go and follow everyone on Medium named Ben? Am I beginning to sound like Tucker…
