I think I've told you before that I actually love the Twilight Zone. The psychological side of things is where I connect most to that older generation of horror. I definitely can't say that Romero original was devoid of merit, but I have a hard time believing the generation that put people on the moon couldn't have done a marginally better job on making convincing zombies.
Dismal may be a slight overstatement, but when so much of the fear factor centers around the zombies, it just really falls flat in my eyes. It almost feels like the actors portraying zombies aren't even trying. Did you see any of Romero's newer zombie movies and still prefer them to Snyder's? Land of the Dead--Survival of the Dead? I feel like people relent a lot on that older movie because it was one of the first to do zombies, but I don't feel like any of those Romero zombies movies are any good hahaha. Romero aside, it's a generally cheap type of horror, but that Snyder one is the rare one that rises to something more in my eyes. 28 Days Later I also really liked.
By and large, horror is the genre I've had the hardest time suspending disbelief with and seeing in movies what older generations used to. I'm optimistic I'll find something to like in the older version of Hill House if it's got anything in common with the Flanagan version thematically, but I doubt it will keep me up all night.
