I think modern games actually bring that idea into review! Take The Last of Us for example. Between the only two games in the series so far, there are more hours worth of cut scenes and character development than the show based off them. And experiencing those twists and turns in the plot as a player was just harrowing sometimes.

That more and more movies and TV shows are being based off of video games to begin with (spare movies like The Super Mario Brothers Movie) I think speaks to the fact there is often a pretty interesting underlying story to many of these games.

Also, it's fascinating to see what different sorts of things game reviews draw from me as a writer versus a movie analyses. Truthfully, I think that my game reviews make for more interesting and personal reads than my film ones a lot of the time. The Mario Galaxy, Zelda, and Katamari Damacy pieces were both a total blast to write and think about for example. It's not every movie review that feels like it draws something quite so interesting or personal from me. The interactive nature of games adds a whole dimension to the write-ups.
