I think you're right that Peele actually intended for that message to come across. It wasn't one that immediately struck me, but it is a really great way of looking at the movie. Race certainly wasn't the only theme at play. I'm not always great at picking up on some of movies' subtler tones. The imagery (espeically in the final ten minutes) was a lot of what made this one for me, unlike Get Out where the underlying message was much more of the experience.
