I wasn't aware of this change at first, but low and behold, after opening Twitter (I will never call it X), you're right. Initially my hope was that this was a move to make people less anxious and less likely to compare themselves. That I think I might just love to see. This just seems like it's encouraging people to be more nefarious and more addicted.
