It is a scary thought that he's our best shot at keeping Trump away from the white house. But it's a very bizarre reality that he very likely is. What reassures me is just how short our attention span is as Americans. Even a couple days after the debate, the read of the room feels a little different than it did on debate night.

When it only takes us a week or two to move on from news of wars and genocides completely, I have a lot of confidence that whatever momentous nonsense occurs between now and the election will wipe our minds clean from his poor debate performance. Really, I saw little worse than I expected.

Even if it were September now, I think enough happens in our politics for twenty October surprises to wipe the slates clean.

Remember the sorts of things Trump supporters excuse from their candidate. That he said hardly a true word on that stage is no dealbreaker in their eyes in the slightest. It's just more of the same. I think it's important for us as a party to be able to take more of a stand than we are. If Trump's past eight years haven't hindered his candidacy, I don't think we should let a lone bad Biden debate get to us. I'd call it a significantly less dire development than when he was accused of rape only a little before the 2020 election and still went on to win.

Happy to agree to disagree! I hope I make a decent case, though.
