I've definitely been on the wrong side in this sort of situation before. Growing up with smart phones, I think people are just way too trigger happy to pull out their phone and start taking pictures and recording without thinking about the impact. I try to be a lot more sensitive about that kind of thing as an adult. Probably they weren't doing it explicitly to be cruel, but it's hard not to interpret that as pretty damn rude. That would have made me completely uncomfortable, too.
