Would you say that you've never before lost a friend over politics? Looking back at the tensions that arose during the 2000-2012 elections seems a little silly in retrospect when we consider how little was on the line comparatively, but I would definitely argue that politics today are worth losing friends over. It's not ideal to, and I'd always prefer to see what common ground we can find, but in many Trump supporters I can't help but see people who don't believe in my very right to vote. I have a hard time shrugging off the vote for a tyrant and against democracy as "a difference of politics." Political disputes can be trivial, but they can also be pretty enormous in my eyes.
